Multiple layers are required to provide a space for the liquid run off at the bottom. A tap at the bottom will provide drainage for whenever you need some liquid fertiliser. Within the upper layer of soil, the worms can move about towards the material to be composted.

The numerous models that can be purchased are also available for indoor use for those with limited or no outdoor space. To grow your worm farm you simply stack more bins on top.

To keep your worms healthy they will need appropriate bedding material. Peat moss or coconut fiber containing a small amount of compost material is well accepted. It is important to keep the bedding moist for the worms. Prepackaged worms usually come complete with bedding material and instructions on how to keep your worms healthy and well fed.

Think carefully about where you locate the bin as well. Worms are unable to tolerate extremes in temperature. Try to keep the temperature between 72 – 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Another option is to get or make a fully insulated system which will help avoid extremes in temperature ranges. Moisture levels will be affected by where you locate the bin as well.

When you have all of the above conditions met you now just need to add worms There are quite a few breeds of worms and some are more suitable for worm farming than others. Red wigglers are a favorite amongst worm farmers. For bait you might want to breed European Night Crawlers.

After you get your worms you will need to acclimatise them for the best chance of survival. You should have received instructions on how to do this. Make sure you have the worms bedding prepared and in place before you purchase your worms.

Now for the fun part, feeding the worms. They can consume any number of items to be used as compost including fruit and vegetable scraps, egg shells, paper products, cotton rags, soaked cardboard boxes, leaves, dirt and hair. To make your worms more efficient cut everything down into small sizes. Fruits should be sliced into strips for easier consumption by the worms.

All of your composting materials are layered on the top layer of soil. The best way to avoid overfeeding is to only add more when nearly all of the previous food has been completely consumed.

All of your worm castings will be found in the bottom layer of soil. This natural fertilizer can be added directly to flower beds and gardens. If your plants like a good dousing with water you can make a liquid version by just adding water.

Worm farming requires very little maintenance. Worms who aren’t happy with their home will simply crawl away in search of greener pastures. Keeping the temperature constant, moisture at an appropriate level and food readily available will help ensure a healthy and happy supply of working worms.
